Life Story of Mufti Menk
Mufti Menk is originally from Zimbabwe. He is an African, who was born on 27, June 1978 in Harare — the capital city of Zimbabwe. His father Shiekh Musa Menk was an Imam of the masjid, where he used to teach Arabic, Quran, and Qirat to his students.
Mufti Menk lived his initial years in the compound of that mosque. His family had a low-income background. In a podcast that happened in 2019, Mufti Menk stated that he almost lived hand to mouth with a very limited budget in his early childhood.
But in that sheer poverty was growing a rich-hearted man, who the world never knew, would make such an impact on its people.
Personal Life & Childhood:
Mufti Menk was very soft-spoken since childhood. His teachers used to term him as a child of an exemplary character.
According to him, he spent a socially clean life. He never went to a nightclub or cinema. He never had a girlfriend all his life, he neither ever touched cigarette nor drugs.
Mufti Menk’s favorite place is Nigeria. He loves to swim. He is a night person. His favorite books are the Holy Quran and Lu Lu Wal Marjaan, which is a hadith book that has in it all the agreed-upon hadiths from Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari. He does not like spicy food.
Student Life & Education:
Mufti Menk’s religious study began at home at a very tender age. He was just 3 years old when he started memorizing the Quran through hearing the students in the mosque where his father preached. He learned Arabic at the age of 6 and did hifdh at the age of 11.
Besides his religious education, he also attained secular education in a British Government Primary School and St. John’s College in Zimbabwe.
The college provided him with many opportunities to understand people with different religious backgrounds. It broaden up his perspective of social life. He also played many sports like cricket, hockey, and basketball and exercised and swam there.
Mufti Menk was a brilliant student. He always scored first to the third position in every class. Despite his love for deen, his dream was to become an ophthalmologist.
But destiny had it all covered. Mufti Menk said ‘When the Almighty wants you somewhere, He makes sure you’re there’.
While he was still studying at St. john’s high school, his father applied to the Islamic University of Madinah on his behalf.
When Mufti Menk got the acceptance letter, he found the offer appealing. Hence he went out to complete his graduate degree in the Islamic jurisprudence/ law at Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia.
He studied in Madinah for 7 years. As he was from the Hanbali community, therefore, he wished to better understand this school of thought, so he decided to further specialize in Hanbali fiqh.
In 1998, he finished his graduation from Islamic university of madinah, and in the same year he decided to go for post-graduation to Darul Uloom in Kantharia, Gujrat, India to study Hanbali fiqh. Meanwhile he also learned Urdu from Delhi University.
Mufti Menk completed his Ph.D. in Social Guidance from Aldersgate University of Philippines in the year 2015.
Mufti Menk Family Life:
Mufti Menk has nine siblings in total, with three sisters and six brothers. He is the second youngest of all his siblings. He married at a very young age.
Mufti Menk was studying at the Islamic University of Madinah, and during that tenure of 1991 – 1998, when he was in his teens, he got married. He went through the pain of divorce while still having a few kids. Later, he remarried.
Mufti Menk has nine children – seven daughters and two sons. He loves them all and tries his best to spend quality time with them along with all his dawah responsibilities. In a podcast he stated that he wants to be the best husband and father.
He is just 46, and most of his children are married. He is also a grandparent.
Mufti Menk Work Life:
Mufti Menk works day and night to place Islam in the hearts of people. But he does not take any salary from his Dawah activities to fulfill his personal needs.
As he lived a financially difficult life, he understands the struggles of people.
According to him, in the developing countries, where people are vulnerable, they should get free islamic education.
At first, he used to teach Arabic and Quran at a local mosque, but after being elected as a grand mufti of Zimbabwe, he started to interact with the general public to solve their personal and social issues in the light of Islam.
He started his dawah organization, which built 52 Islamic institutes & mosques in the year 2019. He has over 22 million followers on social media.
All of this is funded by Mufti Menk’s family. His brothers run a family business, where they support him with a monthly allowance and fund his dawah activities. He never asks the government, private organizations, or the public to raise money for the great work he does.
Mufti Menk Religious Life:
Mufti Menk is from a Sunni family. His community is mostly Hanbali and Shafi. Mufti Menk supports gaining a better understanding of one’s sects, therefore he went to India to study Hanbali fiqh. However, he believes in constructive and healthy debates without spreading hatred to each other.
