1. Protect me from the evil of myself (thoughts, emotions)

Aishah (r.a) told us that Prophet (ﷺ) used to supplicate the following words a lot. When we look into the meaning of this dua, both things from which Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) took refuge either live in our past or future, which could open the door to depression and anxiety.

Anxiety relates to future happenings, and depression relates to past incidents. So, this dua basically saves you from your evil emotions and thoughts or consequences of things you have already done in the past or would do in the future.

When anxiety and depression hit us, we usually find ourselves in the middle of nowhere; where our affairs become scattered, we get filled with fear, worry, sadness or hopelessness, and we don’t know what to do next.

In such a situation, we should recite the following dua of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Which he especially suggested to any distressed person for getting relief and attaining calmness.

3. Dua to Overcome Anxiety and Depression:

We know what anxiety and depression do; they fill us with excessive worry and sadness.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) told us that whoever recites the following dua in times of worry and grief, Allah (swt) removes his worries and replaces his grief with happiness.

Meaning: “O Allah, I am Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand (You have total Mastery over me), Your decision over me has passed, and Your decree upon me is in justice. I ask You by every name with which you have named Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to one of Your creatures, or kept hidden in the Unseen with You, that You make the Quran the life (spring) of my heart, the light within me, the banisher of my depression, and the expeller of my anxiety.”

4. Dua for Mercy in times of Anxiety and Depression

This is the dua of the people of the cave mentioned in the Quran. Allah tells us that they were a bunch of young people who testified to Islam in a society that hated Islam.

As a result, they faced backlash on a government level. Things were so hard on them when they made the following dua and took refuge in a cave. Allah poured mercy on them, guided their affairs and saved them from anxious and depressing.

Roman/ Transliteration: Rabbana atina mil-ladunka Rahmataw wa hayyi lana min amrina rashada

Meaning: “Our Lord! grant us your special mercy and give us right guidance in our affairs.”

Source: Quran (Surah al-Kahf ayah 10)

How Many Times Should I Recite These Duas?

Recite these duas anytime and anywhere unlimitedly. You can supplicate all four duas. But mostly, it gets difficult to do so.

Therefore, the best practice would be to select one suitable dua according to your situation and do a constant dhikr all day; or one time in the morning and evening, as adhkar are always recommended as such. Don’t forget to ponder over the meaning of the dua you choose to recite at the moment.
